Terms of Use
Effective and last updated: June 30, 2026
These Terms cover the QuantJourney Backtester website, open-source package, APIs, hosted research workspace, cloud data services and other QuantJourney services that link to them.
1. Agreement and operator
These Terms form an agreement between you, whether acting personally or for an organization (“you”), and Quant Journey, operating under the QuantJourney brand (“QuantJourney,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), as operator of the Services. If an order form, invoice, subscription page, data-processing agreement or other service-specific notice identifies a different QuantJourney contracting entity, that document identifies the operator for that service and prevails to the extent of any conflict.
By accessing a hosted Service, creating an account, requesting an API key or otherwise using a Service that links to these Terms, you agree to them. If you use the open-source software without a hosted Service, the applicable open-source license governs the software itself; these Terms still govern any website, account, API, cloud data or hosted feature you choose to access.
Service-specific documentation, plan limits, data licenses, order forms and enterprise agreements may add to these Terms. An individually signed agreement controls over these Terms for the subject it covers. If you do not agree, do not use the relevant Service.
2. Services covered
“Services” means the QuantJourney products and surfaces that link to these Terms, including:
backtester.quantjourney.cloud,api.quantjourney.cloud,quantjourney.cloud,quantjourney.pro, their subdomains and related QuantJourney pages;- the
quantjourney-btPython package, its public GitHub repository, documentation and examples; - the hosted Backtester research workspace, accounts, authentication, run history and research artifacts;
- QuantJourney APIs, SDKs, MCP integrations, managed market data, reproducible snapshots and other QJ Cloud Data products; and
- other QuantJourney websites, applications, data products, support channels and services that expressly refer or link to these Terms.
Features may be generally available, beta, technical preview, invite-only or roadmap items. A description of a planned feature is not a commitment to release it. Current availability, limits and data coverage are determined by the relevant product page, documentation, plan or agreement.
3. Open-source software and documentation
The public quantjourney-bt package is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. That license, and any
notices included with the distribution, govern your right to use, modify and redistribute the open-source code.
These Terms do not restrict rights granted by that license. Other repositories, packages, examples or dependencies
may use different licenses; their own license files control.
Website copy, hosted interfaces, non-public software, data compilations, report designs, documentation and QuantJourney names and marks remain protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. You may use public documentation and examples as their stated license permits, but may not imply endorsement or use QuantJourney marks in a misleading way.
4. Accounts, API keys and access
You must provide accurate account information, keep credentials and API keys confidential, use reasonable security controls and promptly notify us of suspected compromise. You are responsible for activity performed with your credentials and for ensuring that your users are authorized. Access is personal to you or limited to the tenant and seats identified in your plan or agreement.
Documented API automation is permitted within applicable authentication, quota, rate-limit and data-license rules. You may not share keys publicly, bypass limits, probe other tenants, use credentials issued to another user or interfere with the availability or security of the Services.
5. Your code, data and research content
You retain your rights in strategy code, parameters, datasets, prompts, configurations and other material you create or submit (“User Content”). Running the open-source package locally does not, by itself, grant us access to your local User Content. If you choose to submit User Content to a hosted workspace, API, support channel or other cloud feature, you grant us the limited right to host, process, transmit and reproduce it only as needed to provide, secure and support that Service and as otherwise stated in your agreement.
You must have all rights and permissions needed to submit User Content. Do not submit credentials, regulated data, vendor data or personal information unless the selected Service and your agreement expressly support that use. You are responsible for your research logic, data provenance, temporal correctness, licenses and lawful use.
6. Cloud data and third-party data
QJ Cloud Data may include QuantJourney-produced data, public data and data licensed from third parties. Your right to access, store, display, derive from or redistribute data depends on the applicable plan, provider terms and data contract. Unless expressly permitted, you may not resell, republish, bulk-export or use restricted data to create a substitute data service.
Data coverage, timestamps, corrections, revisions, corporate-action treatment and point-in-time characteristics vary by source and dataset. Documentation and the QJ Data Contract describe supplied fields and known assumptions; you remain responsible for determining whether a dataset is suitable for your use and legally available in your jurisdiction.
7. Acceptable use
You may not use the Services to:
- violate law, regulation, sanctions, third-party rights or a data-provider license;
- gain unauthorized access, evade authentication or limits, scan for vulnerabilities without permission, introduce malicious code or disrupt another user or service;
- misrepresent identity, account entitlement, research results, data provenance or QuantJourney affiliation;
- collect personal information, send spam or conduct surveillance in an unlawful or abusive way;
- reverse engineer a hosted or non-public component except where applicable law expressly permits it; or
- use the Services to provide regulated financial services unless you have all required authorizations and your agreement expressly permits that use.
Reasonable use of documented APIs, SDKs and MCP tools is allowed. Public web crawling remains subject to robots directives, rate limits, intellectual-property rights and data licenses. We may investigate abuse and suspend or limit access where reasonably necessary to protect users, providers or the Services.
8. Fees, subscriptions and cancellation
Open-source software may be used without charge under its license. Hosted, data, support and enterprise Services may be free, beta, usage-based or paid. Prices, currencies, taxes, quotas, billing periods, renewal, cancellation and refund rules are shown at checkout or in the applicable order form or plan. Mandatory consumer rights, where applicable, are not excluded. You must keep billing information accurate and pay undisputed charges when due.
9. Feedback and QuantJourney materials
We own or license the hosted interfaces, non-public software, service content and QuantJourney marks, excluding User Content, open-source components and third-party materials. If you voluntarily provide product feedback, you allow us to use it without restriction or payment, provided we do not publish your confidential information or identify you without permission.
10. Third-party services
GitHub, PyPI, Discord, Substack, YouTube, data vendors, payment providers and other linked or integrated services operate under their own terms and privacy notices. We are not responsible for third-party services, and linking or integration does not make their content or availability part of our warranty.
11. Research and financial-services disclaimer
QuantJourney provides software, data infrastructure, analytics and research tooling. It is not an investment adviser, broker-dealer, bank, commodity trading adviser, commodity pool operator, custodian or fiduciary, and it does not execute trades or hold client assets. The Services do not provide investment, legal, tax or compliance advice or guarantee any result.
Backtests, walk-forward results, simulations, metrics, scenarios, reports and data are estimates based on selected inputs and assumptions. They may contain errors, delays, survivorship bias, look-ahead bias, missing corporate actions or incomplete cost, borrow, financing, margin, liquidity and tax assumptions. You are responsible for independent validation, point-in-time inputs, model governance, suitability and any decision or trading activity.
12. Availability, changes and termination
Hosted Services are provided on an “as available” basis. We may maintain, modify, suspend or discontinue features, beta services, integrations or datasets. Where reasonably practicable, we will give notice of a material adverse change to a paid Service. You are responsible for exporting records you need and maintaining appropriate backups.
We may restrict or terminate access for non-payment, security risk, abuse, legal requirements or material breach. You may stop using a Service at any time, subject to the applicable billing or order terms. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination—including license, ownership, payment, disclaimers and liability limits—continue to apply.
13. Warranties and liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE HOSTED SERVICES, CONTENT AND DATA ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” WE DISCLAIM IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED SUBJECT TO THE WARRANTY TERMS IN ITS LICENSE.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, QUANTJOURNEY AND ITS PERSONNEL WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, PUNITIVE OR CONSEQUENTIAL LOSS, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, REVENUE, DATA, GOODWILL, TRADING LOSSES OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION. OUR AGGREGATE LIABILITY ARISING FROM A SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THAT SERVICE DURING THE SIX MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM. THESE EXCLUSIONS DO NOT APPLY WHERE APPLICABLE LAW DOES NOT ALLOW THEM OR TO LIABILITY THAT CANNOT LAWFULLY BE LIMITED.
14. Changes and electronic notices
We may update these Terms to reflect product, legal or operational changes. We will post the revised version and update the effective date. For a material change to a paid hosted Service, we may also notify the account contact. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance where permitted by law. Notices and agreements may be delivered electronically.
15. Contact and governing documents
Questions, complaints and legal notices concerning these Terms may be sent through the Backtester contact page or to the address below. The contracting-entity details, governing law and dispute forum stated in an applicable order form, invoice or enterprise agreement control for that commercial relationship. Mandatory rights under applicable law remain unaffected.
